the good:- very pretty fan. it looks nice on the ceiling- the motor is supposed to be very good. but honestly, i've never seen a ceiling fan motor fail, and cheap fans are very easy to replace if you have to.the bad:- complicated installation- confusing installation instructions. installing a light fixture is even more complicated, as they don't tell you that you have to stop the regular installation part-way to do the light fixture.- difficult to set desired brightness on light dimmer.- not compatible with CFLs or LEDs, even dimmable ones.the ugly:- poorly designed "inteli-touch" switch. buttons are hard to press and it's easy to hit the wrong button.- switch for fan makes irritating dings and dongs when turning fan on or changing speed. this problem is not disclosed and cannot be disabled.- too many fan speeds and the process for changing speeds is very complicated.make no mistake, casablanca makes pretty fans. but i don't buy fans to look at, i buy them to use as ceiling fans and light fixtures. when i was fan shopping, i was directed to casablanca fans because the motor is supposedly superior to the cheap hunter fans you can get at home depot. so far as i can tell, the motor works fine, but so does the motor for the cheap home depot fan i have in another room.what will drive you insane if you get this fan is the wall-mount/remote. the buttons are clunky, wide, and thin. there is one button that controls all light features (light kits are sold separately, FYI), one button that controls all fan functions (except reverse, which has its own button), and a power switch. just hitting each switch once turns the light or fan, although the switches are so clunky it's a lot harder than just a normal on/off switch. also, you must aim your finger very carefully so as not to hit more than one button (more on this danger below). the light switch also controls the dimmer, and here is an example of this fan's poor design: it is impossible to set the light for maximum or minimum brightness. holding the button down caused the lights to gradually get brighter, and then gradually get dimmer, and back again, but it's hard to tell and the cycle doesn't stop exactly when you let go of the button. there is a "demo" feature that goes through the brightness cycle, but it won't actually set the brightness and the fan won't remember any setting you try from the demo.but it's the fan button that i fear touching the most. it makes an irritating set of chimes every time you turn the fan on or change its speed. there is no way to turn off this noise, and nothing on the box warns you that this fan has this annoying "feature." and since the buttons are clunky and close-set, it is really easy to hit the fan button when aiming for the light switch. the fan switch also acts kind of like a "dimmer," in that you have to hold it down to cycle through six (!) fan speeds to get to the speed you want. to get a slower speed, you have to turn the fan off, then on, and then press and hold the button. very counter-intuitive. and during the 5-10 minutes it takes you each time to get to the right speed, your room sounds like its ground zero in a battle of doorbells.if you can endure the doorbell battle and get the fan to your desired speed, it wobbles! apparently, casablanca does not bother to make sure its fans are balanced. this is obviously a conscious choice on their part, as they include a "balancing kit" with their fans. yeah, right - i'm supposed to figure out somehow which fan blade is unbalanced, put this thing on, and hope for the best.one last word about the lights: this fan is not compatible with CFLs or LEDs, not even dimmable ones. since different dimmable LED light bulbs are designed to work best with different dimmers (e.g., incandescent, magnetic, electronic), i called casablanca to find out which one they use - they have no idea! so forget this light fixture if you're concerned about energy efficiency.
